Gynaecomasty

Gynecomastia is the most common benign breast disease in men. A case of gynaecomastia is when there is a significant development of the mammary gland, which can occur due to hormonal issues, taking a certain medication, genetic problem, disease or due to the use of anabolic steroids. Taking these factors into account, before going ahead with any treatment, a detailed study should be carried out to rule out any pathology associated with the gynaecomastia situation.

The most frequent reason for the development of the mammary gland is due to the imbalance of oestrogen and testosterone levels, which can occur at different stages of a man’s life.

This situation may cause discomfort (sensitivity to touch and/or pain) and embarrassment, and may affect the patient psychologically.

How to treat?

To treat a gynaecomastia situation, we can resort to two techniques in isolation or in association:

Liposuction: for the simplest cases where there is only an accumulation of fat in the region. The scar is imperceptible and only a few millimetres long.
Mastectomy: reduction surgery for cases where removal of the excess mammary gland is necessary. The scar is small and located in the transition area between the areola and the skin of the breast.

The technique used will be the most suitable to reduce the size and reshape the patient’s breast, thus giving it back its masculine shape.
